PSHE/RSE

Intent

At St Mawes, we want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of living in modern Britain. PSHE and RSE put in place the building blocks needed for children to form and maintain positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online.

 At St Mawes Primary we have chosen a whole school approach using Jigsaw.

Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they are and how they relate to other people. It teaches children to become aware of their thoughts and feelings throughout the programme, relating this to the PSHE and RSE subject matter being studied.

 

Implementation

Jigsaw consists of six puzzles (half-term units of work) containing six pieces (lessons). Each Piece has two learning intentionsOne is based on specific PSHE learning; and the other is based on emotional literacy and social skills. This means that Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with modern issues such as body image, bullying, and internet safety. Below is the topics that will be covered each half term.

Autumn 1: Being Me in My World

Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals

Spring 2: Healthy Me

Summer 1: Relationships

Summer 2: Changing Me

Jigsaw raises self-awareness, group awareness, collaboration skills, teamwork experience, respectfulness, etc., preparing children for the wider world and their position in it.

If your child raises an issue at home that you are not sure how to respond to and you wish to gain further information, please see the class teacher in the first instance for guidance on what was covered in the lesson. Alternatively, you can visit the Jigsaw website below.
 

Jigsaw PSHE is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships and Health Education Guidance.  This includes ALL the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education and includes the non-statutory aspect of Sex Education (Where do babies come from?). Jigsaw ensures all children are given this human reproduction information in an age and stage appropriate way.

By the end of primary school, it is mandatory for pupils to have been taught content on:

  • Internet safety and harms
  • Physical health and fitness
